Questions that get asked often

Useful information before your trip. If yours is not here, message the office and a person will answer.

Booking and price

How much does it cost to swim with seals in Plettenberg Bay?

Swim with Seals is R1 295 per person and Seal Viewing is R795 per person. Group rates on request for four or more. The booking calendar always shows the live price for your date.

Do children pay the same as adults?

Yes. Children need all the same equipment and take up a full boat seat under SAMSA standards. They often need more attention during the trip, which we are happy to give.

How do I book?

Pick your trip, date and time on the booking calendar and pay by credit or debit card. If you would rather talk to someone first, WhatsApp or call the office.

Can we book the boat for our own group?

Yes. A private boat tour takes up to 6 guests, swimming or viewing. For bigger groups, schools and functions we make special arrangements: contact the office.

Do you sell gift vouchers?

Yes. Vouchers for Swim with Seals and for Seal Viewing can be bought online and are redeemed on the booking calendar.

Before you come

When do you operate?

Every day, all year round. Trips leave at 10:00, 12:00 and 14:00, with an 08:00 trip in busy season. Departures depend on the weather and on numbers. We are closed on Christmas Day and New Year's Day.

Where do we meet?

At the Offshore Adventures office in the Central Beach car park, Hopwood Street, Plettenberg Bay. Please arrive 30 minutes before departure so we can do the paperwork and fit your gear.

What should I bring?

A swimsuit to wear under your wetsuit, your own towel and something warm for afterwards. We supply the wetsuit, mask, snorkel and fins. For Seal Viewing, bring a windbreaker and a camera.

How long does the trip take?

About 1.5 hours from launch to landing, with up to 30 minutes in the water with the seals.

Are there change rooms and showers?

Yes. The base has change rooms, warm showers and lockers for your valuables.

In the water

I can't swim, or I'm not a strong swimmer. Can I still do it?

Yes. The wetsuit keeps you buoyant and we have flotation aids on request. Your guide is in the water with you at all times. We don't swim long distances: mostly we float around the seals.

I have a disability. Can I still swim with the seals?

Yes. Call us and tell us about your disability and we will work around it. Nothing gives us more pleasure than making sure everyone gets to swim with the seals.

If I don't want to swim, can I still come on the boat?

Yes, provided there is space. Book a Seal Viewing trip: you ride on the same boat as the swimmers and watch everyone else get wet.

Does size matter?

No. We have wetsuits in all sizes, from children of about 4 years up to XXXL.

How old do children need to be?

The swim suits children from 6 years. Our smallest wetsuits fit children of about 4, so if you have a confident younger swimmer, talk to us first. Seal Viewing is open from 2 years.

Will we definitely see seals?

Yes. The colony lives at Robberg all year, so seal sightings are guaranteed. Dolphins and whales are a bonus when they turn up.

Safety, weather and cancellations

Should I be concerned about sharks?

Sharks are a natural part of life at the seal colony in winter, when sharks and other predators follow the sardines. Pups born about six months earlier start hunting sardines, and because they are inexperienced, sharks get a chance to feed on them. The pups learn very quickly, so the sharks are only there for a short period: June and the first two weeks of July. We stop swimming in June and July. In May, August and September we use spotters on the mountain to alert the boats to any shark. From October we return to normal operations. Seal behaviour is a good indicator of shark presence, we keep a boat close by as a lookout, and we run at 10:00, 12:00 and 14:00 so that the sun is out and we can see well in the water. It is the open ocean and sharks do move around, but we have been operating for more than a decade with an excellent safety record.

What about rabies in seals?

There has been a rabies outbreak in Cape fur seals. We monitor the situation closely with the environmental authorities and CapeNature. There have been a few isolated cases, and we continue to operate with extra safety measures: spotters watch for unusual seal behaviour, guides stay close to you in the water, we carry first aid supplies for bite wounds, and we have slightly reduced the time in the water to keep the seals calm. Our local hospital is well prepared for seal bite injuries, with trained staff and vaccines on hand. If you feel uneasy, join a viewing trip instead. The choice is yours.

What if the weather is bad?

Not to worry. We go out in most weather, even rain. The only time we cancel is for a strong east wind or east swell. We let booked guests know in advance, and if we can't reschedule you, we refund you in full.

What is your cancellation policy?

If we cancel because of unsafe sea or weather conditions, you get a full refund. Changes need 24 to 48 hours' notice by email. A no-show is charged in full. If conditions turn unsafe for swimming after launch, the trip is refunded down to the viewing rate. The full terms are on the terms and conditions page.

Do I need to sign anything?

Yes. Every guest signs an indemnity form before the trip. A parent or legal guardian signs for anyone under 18.

Photos and video

I don't have an underwater camera. What about pictures?

Your guide photographs and films every trip, so you can keep your hands free. You can see the pictures at the office afterwards and we send a link by email. Ask the office about the current photo and video options.

Where do I find my trip photos afterwards?

Trip photos are shared in our online photo folder. If you can't find yours, send us a request from the trip photos page with your trip date and time and we will forward the link.

The seals are in. Are you?

Trips leave Central Beach every day at 10:00, 12:00 and 14:00. Pick a date, pay by card, and we will have a wetsuit in your size waiting.
