Marine field courses

Time at sea for marine students and researchers: a week inside the Sardine Run on the Wild Coast, or project days aboard our boats at Robberg.

Student Sardine Run

Explore South Africa's Wild Coast on a Student Sardine Run expedition: discover marine wildlife, learn about ocean conservation and take part in guided observation work.

You snorkel in the middle of the feeding events as dolphins herd bait balls to the surface, sharks strike and whales and seabirds dive through walls of sardines. Around that, the programme teaches marine ecosystem dynamics, predator and prey behaviour and ethical wildlife interaction.

  • Seven nights' accommodation at Chintsa, on a bed and breakfast basis
  • Six ocean days, weather permitting
  • PADI Snorkel Guide course and an EFR first aid course
  • Wetsuit, mask and fins, packed refreshments on the boat and a diver permit
  • Experienced guides and East London Airport transfers
  • Minimum age 18. No experience required

Research at Robberg

We support marine and conservation research in our area, especially in the Robberg Nature Reserve and Marine Protected Area.

Researchers and students can join our boats for their projects, and we lend a hand where we can. The Cape fur seal colony is a short boat ride from Central Beach, and we are out there most days of the year. Interested? Contact us.
